Open Water Rowing

Bunk's Blog: Hillary Bunker on the Rowing Season

Our season started out with our annual Columbus Day Row. We competed with North Haven and Station Maine. It was a two race event in which we took first place in each. We also participated in an obstacle course style race in Rockland, which was hosted by Station Maine. It was a timed event in which the team with the fastest time won. We picked up another win here, even though we were against an adult team that came from Belfast.

Our next event was in Burlington V.T. It consisted of two timed races (where we row in heavy throll pin boats). In the first race we placed first and in the second we managed to get third. Our combined times still managed to get us third. Next came our annual Vinalhaven vs. North Haven Duel. This race is a lengthy sprint up the Thorofare and back. Throughout this long race we managed to stay out in front and bring in another first place.

Our last race was the Icebreaker in Hull Massachusetts. This is our biggest race. It was a two race combined time event. We were placed in the first division with four other teams. In these races we switch in and out of different boats. For the first race we were in a throll pin boat but still kept out in front. Our second race we came in a close second but our first place time before held us in first. The last part of the Icebreaker is a Nautical Mile sprint. All the boats are towed away from the beach one nautical mile and then we race in. We placed third out of the 17 teams there. We also brought home a first place plaque for our division.
