Sue Dempster - Pre-Kindergarten

Sue graduated from Rhode Island College with a B.A. in Early Childhood Education and Psychology and taught in day care centers in Providence for 5 years before moving to Vinalhaven.  Continuing in the field of early childhood education, she operated a home day care and a nursery school in her home for 11 years.  She became the librarian at Vinalhaven School in the fall of 1999 and earned a Library Technician Certificate from the University of Maine at Augusta.  Sue is on the Board of Directors for Mainely Girls and helped start A Girl’s Point of View Book Club that serves girls in grades 4-12 all over the state of Maine. She is on the middle school team and the early literacy curriculum team and is also a mentor to middle school girls.  She enjoys reading, cooking, walking, and photography as well as spending time with her husband, family and friends.

Kayla Hunsinger - Kindergarten


Kayla was born and raised on Vinalhaven. After graduating from high school, Kayla left the island to attend the University of Maine at Farmington. After receiving her B.S. in Early Childhood Education, she returned home to the island and began her teaching career as a Kindergarten teacher. Kayla has been teaching Kindergarten ever since! Kayla spends a lot of her free time hanging out with her family. She is very fortunate to have four generations living on Vinalhaven on both sides of her family. Her children, Ellie and Liam, consume most of her free time, but Kayla also enjoys hiking, walking her dog Jax, reading, and going on picnics (usually all with Ellie and Liam in tow!).


Meagan Miller - 1st Grade

Meagan was born and raised on Vinalhaven. After graduating from Vinalhaven School in 2007, she attended college at the University of Maine at Orono. At UMO, Meagan studied Elementary Education. After she received her BS in Elementary Education, Meagan returned to Vinalhaven to pursue her career in teaching. She taught third grade for three years before taking an extended leave of absence to raise her children, Logan and Henry. Meagan returned to the Vinalhaven School at the start of the 2017 school year to teach first grade. During her free time, she enjoys spending time with her extended family, who all live on Vinalhaven. Meagan also enjoys reading books, going on vacation with her husband, Josh, and doing fun activities with Logan, Henry and Josh!  


Melissa Andrews - 2nd Grade


Melissa started her teaching career as a nursery school teacher when her children were young. When they started elementary school she volunteered in their classrooms on a daily basis. It inspired her to return to school and finish her Bachelors of Social Science degree from University of Maine at Augusta. After receiving her degree, she taught special education at Vinalhaven School from the fall of 2004-2011. For a year, she worked at the Belfast Head Start in the Early Head Start program. She returned to Vinalhaven School as an education technician in 2013. She is currently the second grade teacher. Her hobbies are traveling, reading, riding horses and baking.

Cherie Doughty - K-12 Literacy Specialist

Cherie (Miller) Doughty is a 1987 graduate of Valley High School in Bingham, Maine. She attended the University of Maine at Farmington where she was an Alumni Scholar and a recipient of the Paul Douglas Teacher Scholarship.  She graduated in 1992 with a B.S in Early Childhood Education.  Cherie completed her student teaching in Kindergarten and Grade 2 on Vinalhaven.  She met and eventually married a local and has remained since.  While waiting for a Kindergarten teaching position, she taught in a variety of positions at Vinalhaven School including Elementary Ed. Tech., Special Education, a HS English class, MS Math and Science, Title 1, and Reading Recovery.  She then taught kindergarten for 5 years, and is currently concentrating on literacy needs K-8 in the Title 1 Position.  Cherie is the current MAP Coordinator for Vinalhaven School and is a member of the Early Literacy Curriculum Team and the K-12 English Curriculum Team.  Outside of school, she is a member of Open Bible Baptist Church of Vinalhaven and teaches Sunday School ages 5 - 8.  She also enjoys baking, reading to learn, studying the Enneagram, and spending time with her family and pets.


Kelsey Barker - K-5 Educational Technician


Kelsey graduated Vinalhaven High School and has been on the island most of her life. Before working at the Vinalhaven School, she went lobstering for fourteen years, and then took some time to raise her youngest son. She has raised her family on Vinalhaven and has had three children graduate and currently has a third grader enrolled. In the past she has been a class advisor for her daughter and son's classes. She is on the coaching staff of the Varsity Lady Vikings basketball team. In her free time, she enjoys traveling, camping on the surrounding islands, picnicing, boating, sea glassing, and spending time with family and friends, and being with her two sharpeis "Lewis" and "Clark".


Janica Barrows - Kindergarten Educational Technician


Janica Barrows graduated from the University of New England with a Bachelors of Science in Health, Wellness, and Occupational Studies and she is currently working towards her Master's in Public Health. You have probalby recognized her from one of her many jobs on the island. Her background with children started with being a nanny over in Germany and then she decided to come back to Vinalhaven to watch many different children around Vinalhaven. She is really excited to help children in the area of play and social interaction as it was a big focus of her edcuation. In her spare time, Janica loves to hike, paint, read, eat, and travel.
