Mission Statement:

The Vinalhaven School Library exists to provide a full range of media in a centralized collection that will support the curriculum and meet the informational, cultural, and recreational needs of students and the professional needs of the staff.  In addition, the library provides access to information resources beyond the school walls.

Effective student and staff use of media resources is

promoted through programs of instruction prepared in partnership between classroom teachers and the school librarian.

Through this instruction students will become effective users of ideas and information and independent, life long learners.

We are in the midst of reading and voting for our favorite books from the Chickadee Award collection (Maine’s picture book of the year award) and the Maine Student Book Award collection (book award for grades 4-8). Votes from around the state are tallied and the winners announced in mid April. These collections are generously provided to our school library from the Vinalhaven Friends of the Library (Town Library).
In May, Vinalhaven does it’s own picture book award program: The Golden Trap Award! Fourth & Fifth graders will review picture books from our collection, choose one to write a review on and then present it to their classmates. From there, they choose 10 books that will be presented and read to students in grades K-3, who then vote for their favorite. The winner is announced in June.

Michelle Stanley, Emily Cohn & Kelsey Byrd have been facilitating the girls book clubs, A Girl’s Point of View, for MS & HS girls this year. It has been difficult to plan meetings around all the other activities and events going on, but they have done their best. If you still have a book club book out, please make sure to return it to the library soon.

Island Readers & Writers visited our school in March and brought Kimberly Ridley and Rebekah Raye who presented their new book, The Secret Pool. They started the day with an assembly for grades K-5 and then did workshops on writing and illustrating with grades 3,4,5. The students loved it! And the best part for all was receiving a signed copy of the book! Thanks to IR&W!

Some of you may have noticed a new face behind the library desk these days. Margaret Qualey is our new library aide and takes care of things while I am in the pre-k room. She has a lot of enthusiasm and some great new ideas! Please stop by and say hi to her between Monday and Thursday mornings.
