Vinalhaven College Fund

Eligibility
Graduating seniors planning on attending a four year college, full time, are invited to apply. The scholarship committee will award one scholarship per year, based on academic performance and school and community involvement. A strong family and current connection to Vinalhaven and/or the applicant’s intention to benefit the community in the future will also be considered. The scholarship is not primarily need based, but financial information will be requested and reviewed. SAT scores and class rank will not be considered. The scholarship will be awarded at the discretion of the scholarship committee.

Payment
The $2000 renewable* scholarship will be awarded after the first semester of college and at the beginning of the school year there after as long as the student is in good standing with his/her institution. The scholarship committee requires a written statement about the college experience at the end of each school year and a current recommendation from a faculty member. Scholarship recipients are asked to send a copy of their first semester transcript to:

*For the first year only, scholarship recipients will be awarded $250.00 at the beginning of the first semester with the balance being awarded according to the criteria explained above.

  • Transcript
  • Three letters of Recommendation:
    1. One from the school counselor
    2. One from a teacher
    3. One from someone who knows you outside of school. Close family members are not permitted to write recommendations.
  • Interview â€" Applicants may be asked for an interview with the scholarship committee.

Re-application

  • Year end transcript

Students who take time off or change programs will be asked to write an essay explaining why they took the actions that they did with the understanding that their eligibility for the scholarship may have changed.

The Island Institute offers a variety of scholarships that support island students attending higher education institutions, high schools, and non-traditional programs (i.e. summer camps, EMT training, captain's license courses)

Mitchell Institute Scholarship Program

The Mitchell Institute awards a scholarship to a graduating senior from every public school in Maine.  The scholarship award is in the amount of up to $5000 for students who are pursuing a four-year degree and $2500 for students pursuing a two-year degree.  One scholarship per county in the amount of $6000 is awarded with a preference to a first-generation college student.  Criteria for the scholarship are: academic performance/potential, a record of community service, and financial need.

Maine Community Foundation

The Maine Community Foundation administers many scholarships for Maine students.  Each scholarship has its own eligibility requirements, review process and application deadline.  Many scholarships are limited to residents of specific counties or graduates of specific high schools.
