Vinalhaven Cross Country
Coaches: Herbie Parsons & Meg Lyons
The Vinalhaven Cross Country team is open to all students in grades 8 - 12. The season goes during the months of September and October with cross country meets almost every weekend. Students of all running levels are welcome and encouraged to run.
Due to the small size of our school, North Haven and Vinalhaven schools generally compete together as Fox Islands Cross Country. We try to meet once a week and run together from the Thoroughfare out to Brown's Head Light.
Our schedule includes small meets with other island schools, medium sized meets with several mainland schools and large invitationals where we compete against upward of 50 to 100 teams, most from around the state of Maine. The season culminates with Regionals where we compete against all other Class C and D schools in the Western Conference.
For more information about the running team, contact Meg Lions at mlyons@vinalhavenschool.org.
Emma Lundberg Qualifies for New England Championship!

Saturday, October 27, Leavitt Area High School, Turner: It was a Paul Simon kinda day: You could see your destination slip-slidin’ away. Mud ‘n
light rain ‘n mud ‘n more mud. But our two strongest Fox Islands
runners, having qualified at Regionals, both ran tough races over the
5 km/3.1 mile course.
Emma “The Silver Shadow” Lundberg (Vinalhaven senior), improving each
recent week, blasted her best of the season, placing 3rd out of 91,
thus also qualifying for the New England Championships. Building
strength and speed week by week under the experienced guidance of
coach Meg Lyons, Emma started the race about ninth, but worked up to
third by mile 1. After mile 2 she annihilated the course’s one very
steep and challenging hill, moved away dramatically from her closest
pursuers and gained on the leaders. She held that to the finish. She’s
the fastest Fox Islands girl since at least 1995–possibly ever–though
her time of 20:56, like everyone’s, was slowed by the mud.
With the 21st fastest time of the day overall among all 280 girls in
Classes A, B, and C, Emma qualified in the top 25 for the New England
Championships at Twin Brooks, Cumberland in two weeks. Class C winner
Adele Espy of Waynflete, in 20:08, led her team to victory with 40
points, over Mattanawcook, 56, and Monmouth, 105. Written by Herbie Parsons 10/29/07
